ClassArena vs Kahoot!: Which Classroom Game Tool Fits Your Class?

Kahoot! is the tool most teachers already know, and for good reason. ClassArena does something different: it turns a review into a team game show on the projector. Here is how the two actually compare, including the cases where Kahoot! is the right call.

How a game actually runs

In Kahoot!, the questions appear on the shared screen and every student answers on their own device after joining with a game PIN. Points reward being both right and fast, and a podium closes out the game. It is quick to launch and students tend to know the routine already.

In ClassArena, the teacher runs the game from one device on the projector and the class plays in teams. A Quiz Board works like a Jeopardy board: a team picks a category and point value, the room talks it over, and the teacher awards the points. Face-Off, Lightning, Tournament, Word Storm, Off Limits, the randomizer Wheel and Buzz-In give you seven more ways to play the same question set.

Devices and accounts

Neither tool needs student accounts for a live game. Kahoot! players join with a PIN and a nickname. The difference is whether devices are required at all: Kahoot! is built around every student answering on a screen, while ClassArena works with zero student devices. If you want phones in the mix, ClassArena's Buzz-In mode can open a room code so students buzz from their own devices, but it is optional.

That matters on days when Chromebooks are charging, phones are banned, or half the class forgot a device. It also matters for younger students, where one shared screen is easier to manage than twenty-five.

What you get for free

Kahoot!'s free plan for teachers caps how many participants can join a game, and the cap depends on the plan and on the age of the players; the paid Kahoot!+ plans raise that cap and add features. Check Kahoot!'s current plans page before you decide, since the tiers change.

ClassArena's free plan includes 1 active game, 4 of its 8 game modes (Quiz Board, Face-Off, Buzz-In and the Randomizer Wheel), up to 2 teams per game, and one buzz-in room for up to 25 students. Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year and adds the other four modes, unlimited games, up to 8 teams, unlimited buzz-in rooms, bigger document uploads and per-student analytics.

Building questions

Both tools let you write questions by hand, and Kahoot! has a very large library of ready-made quizzes. ClassArena has a smaller public library of free games you can clone, plus an AI question helper and Doc to Game, which builds a board from a study guide or worksheet you upload.

Pick Kahoot! when…

  • Every student has a device and you want individual results from each one.
  • You want a fast, familiar exit-ticket style check in five minutes.
  • You rely on a big library of existing quizzes you don't want to rebuild.

Pick ClassArena when…

  • You want the class working in teams, talking through answers out loud.
  • Devices are limited, banned, or more distraction than help that day.
  • Review days feel repetitive and you want eight formats from one question set.

Frequently asked questions

Is ClassArena a replacement for Kahoot!?

Not entirely. Kahoot! is strong for individual, device-based quizzes. ClassArena is built for team game shows on a shared screen. Plenty of teachers use Kahoot! for quick checks and ClassArena for review days.

Do students need devices or accounts for ClassArena?

No. The teacher runs the game on the projector. Students never create accounts. Phones are optional and only used as buzzers in Buzz-In mode.

How much does ClassArena cost compared to Kahoot!?

ClassArena is free for 1 active game with 4 modes (Quiz Board, Face-Off, Buzz-In and the Randomizer Wheel). Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year and unlocks all 8. Kahoot! has a free plan with a participant cap and several paid Kahoot!+ tiers; check their plans page for current prices.

Can I use my Kahoot! questions in ClassArena?

There is no direct Kahoot! import. The quickest route is Doc to Game: upload a document with your questions or study guide and it builds a board for you, which you can then edit.
